The flow

From sign-up to paid in three steps

Hitting Get Started walks you through all three. Five minutes start to finish. Money lands 1-3 business days after we approve.

Step 1

Confirm you qualify

A 30-second eligibility check, then you verify your identity with a government ID and a quick selfie.

Step 2

Connect your MyChart

One-click sign-in at your hospital — same secure flow you use to connect any health app. Records arrive in seconds.

Want confirmation this matches how Epic (the software company behind MyChart and most U.S. hospital records systems) describes third-party data transfers? Read Epic's explanation →

Step 3

Get paid by direct deposit

$150 per qualifying care journey, up to $750 total. Paid via ACH straight from our company bank to yours.

Trust & privacy

What happens to your data

No identifiable health data is ever sold. The receipt of your payment is the only thing we keep long-term.

Pulled via your hospital's official sign-in

Same standardized OAuth flow Epic (the company behind MyChart) certifies for every approved third-party health app. We never see your MyChart password.

De-identified per HIPAA Safe Harbor

All 18 identifiers stripped under 45 CFR 164.514(b)(2). What's left isn't your data anymore — it's a research dataset.

Identifiable originals destroyed

After de-identification, the identifiable copy of your records is permanently destroyed. We keep only the de-identified version.

Never sold identifiably

Only the de-identified dataset is licensed to research labs and AI companies. Your name never leaves us.

Common questions

How long does the whole thing take?

About 5 minutes start to finish: eligibility check, identity verification, MyChart sign-in, records pull, review. Once we approve your claim (typically within 1 business day), the ACH payment arrives in your bank in 1-3 business days.

How much can I earn?

$150 per qualifying care journey — a chronic condition with at least 10 documented visits at the same hospital system. Capped at $750 (5 care journeys) per patient, paid once.

Is this safe? What's actually happening when I sign in?

When you click "Connect MyChart," your hospital opens its own secure sign-in page. You log in there — we never see your password or 2FA codes. After you approve the share, your hospital sends us a read-only copy of your records via the standard SMART-on-FHIR protocol (the protocol every approved third-party Epic app uses). Here's Epic's own walkthrough of this flow.

What if I don't qualify?

Most people who don't qualify find out before sharing any data. Step 1 of the flow is a self-check covering your condition, visit count, age, state of residence, and a few other criteria — if you can't honestly check all the boxes, you'll know up front and we never pull anything. In the rarer case where we do pull your records but you fall short of the threshold (e.g., fewer than 10 documented visits for a chronic condition), no payment is sent and we destroy everything we pulled. We never keep records of someone we couldn't pay.

Is my identifiable data ever sold to AI labs?

Never. The only thing licensed externally is the de-identified version of your data, processed per the HIPAA Safe Harbor standard. We also destroy the identifiable copy after de-identification is complete — see our Terms for the full lifecycle.

Which hospitals are supported?

After you click "Get started," the second step is a searchable list of every supported hospital — you'll know in 10 seconds whether yours is on it. The list covers any hospital that runs on Epic — roughly 1 in 3 US hospitals by count and more than half of US patient records, including most large academic medical centers (Mass General Brigham, UCSF, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, NYU Langone, and most others you'd recognize). Epic is the company behind MyChart, so as a quick mental test: if you've ever used a MyChart app for any of your hospitals, you're almost certainly covered. If your hospital isn't in the list, email matt@melangescience.com.

Can I delete my data later?

Yes, but in practice most of what's deletable is already gone by the time you'd ask. Your identifiable records are destroyed automatically once we've de-identified them — usually within a day of submission. So when you email matt@melangescience.com to delete, we're typically just confirming the auto-destruction already happened and removing any residual identity-verification data plus the minimal transaction record we keep (your email + payout last-4 of your account). The de-identified version is not personally identifiable, can't be tied back to you, and is retained indefinitely per the Terms.

How do you pay me?

Direct deposit (ACH) from our company bank to yours. We don't pay via PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, check, or gift cards — just bank-to-bank transfer. You provide your routing number, account number, and account-holder name during signup.
